Don't Fear the Cowbell, Fear the Walken

Today's Recommended Listening: The Reaper - Blue Öyster Cult
HOLY CRAP! This song has a lot of history.
This song was the inspiration for an
SNL sketch that aired on April 8, 2000.
This skit featured many on the SNL cast (including Will Ferrell)
pretending to be BOC during a recording session for The Reaper.
Also, Christopher Walken played the recording artist 'Bruce Dickenson'
In case you were ever wondering, America's obsession with Chris Walken, Will Ferrell, and Cowbells all come from this video.
More recently, this song was featured in both Guitar Hero and Rock Band
(It was such a good song, they had to use it twice)

Show Me Where To Look, Tell Me Will Love Be There?

Today's Recommended Listening: Shine - Collective Soul
Great Song, I love the guitar riff.
I'll never forget the first time I heard it.
It was 5 something in the morning.
My radio alarm clock was going off.
At first I thought it was a dream.
As I listened I decided to immediately
get up and learn the riff on my guitar.
Good song.

GOJIRRA! AHH NOUUU! ITZ GOOOOJIRRA!

Today's Recommended Listening: Godzilla - Blue Öyster Cult
Ahh yes, the 1970's, I don't remember them at all.
But I love this song, I love the low slung, Black Sabbath worthy guitar riff.
Right out of the gate this song is a hit.

By the way, that little Ö character is called an Umlaut.
They added it "because of the Wagnerian aspect of Metal."
From a linguistic viewpoint, this might instead be regarded as a diaeresis.
Many bands have since imitated BOCs Umlaut in their own names.
Motörhead, Mötley Crüe, Queensrÿche, and Spinal Tap.
I thing it is just another example of BOC being ridiculous.

If I Ever Get Outta Here, I'm Givin It All Away

Today's Recommended Listening: Band On The Run - Wings & Paul McCartney
It's time for this blog to take a decidedly upbeat turn.
Brush it off, Brush it off.
I love this song, it's like 3 songs in one.
Plus, I imagine that this is the kinda song where
the live version would blow the studio version out of the water.

The World Was On Fire, No One Could Save Me But You

Today's Recommended Listening: Wicked Games - Chris Isaak
Wow, I'm going through a bit of a blue period arn't I?
Don't worry, I promise it won't last long.
Depressing music is like antifreeze.
It tastes delicious but too much can be fatal.

Gimme Stitches Now or Never

Today's Recommended Listening: Gimme Stitches - Foo Fighters
How can you go on when you're murdering someone? Killin' me like you do.
I love the way this song sounds. What effect is he using on the lead guitar?
It's almost like a shiver chorus pedal or something... hmmmm.
Listen for it to start at 0:20
(Please don't say 'distortion' cause then I'd have to say 'Really?' O_o)

Dirty Water, I ain't Drinkin No More

Today's Recommended Listening: Dirty Water performed by John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers
There is also a decent version performed by Shemekia Copeland.
It's definitely not the original but unfortunately, I couldn't find the original.
Please excuse John Mayall, as he is 70 years old at the time this was recorded.
Shemekia is a little younger, but she isn't a very good singer.
If you know where I can find a better version of this song, let me know ok?

Tell me are you a bad fish too?

Today's Recommended Listening: Badfish - Sublime
It is impossible to pick a single sublime song to put on showcase.
I'll start with Badfish.
The story of Bradly Nowell, the lead singer of Sublime is remarkable.
I recommend you read the Wikipedia entry or something.
Sublime is a band that rose to fame postmortem.
That alone should spark your interest.

NINJA ATTACK!!!

Today's Recommended Listening: Peaches - Presidents of the United States of America
Well, the presidents are being really lame today.
The Youtube video has embedding disabled,
and the audio quality is crap on every other copy I could find.
If I feel generous I'll pirate the video and put it up on my Esnips account.
If not, well then, you'll just have to click the peaches and see what happens.
Enjoy.
P.S. Watch out for Ninjas.

Anytime She Goes Away

Today's Recommended Listening: Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers
Ok so there's this new video game coming out.
It's called 'Dante's Inferno' and the commercial for it
is one of the most haunting pieces of advertising I've ever seen,(since the gears of war commercial back in 2006)
I even went so far as to track down the exact version used in the background.
It's very short, only 2 minutes which only adds to it's mystery.
Bill Withers wrote this song in 1971, making it one of his earliest hit singles.
He is also famous for Lean On Me and Just the Two Of Us

HAY HAY HAY HEEEEYYY!

Today's Recommended Listening is Don't You by Simple Minds
You might recognize this song.
I can't seem to get it out of my head.
I can't forget it. It's 80s-tastic!

Yay! Led Zeppelin Week!

Today's Recommended Listening: Fool In The Rain - Led Zeppelin
So this starts my Led Zeppelin week, I think we'll all agree that they deserve a week. They have enough songs for Led Zeppelin Year,
but we'll start with a week and see how that goes.

Fool in the Rain is one of the greatest songs of all time.
There is just so much going on in this song.
The music is amazing,
the lyrics are incredible,
and the singing is beyond reproach.
You'll have to listen several times to get the full effect.
